The magic of a 5-second pause

Hi everyone,

Here’s a quick tip for your next session: just pause.

I've learned this from some of my more quiet, introverted graduate students. They have a quiet advantage that I love.

When SLPs ask a question in therapy, the instinct is to jump in right away if the student doesn’t answer. I see this especially with the extroverted SLPs who are used to talking a lot. We rephrase, prompt, or start giving hints. But lately I’ve watched how being quiet can be great.

That extra wait time is huge for:

  • kids who need extra processing time, which is all of them!
  • bilingual students
  • students who freeze up if they feel rushed

It may feel awkward at first, but the silence gives the student space. The answers I hear are sometimes less prompted and can give the child a chance to steer the conversation.

With how quiet our students with communication disorders are, they have been responding well to quiet, introverted grad students. These kids like to take their time.

Knowing you, you may already build in a little wait time. If not, force yourself to stop, smile, and count to five in your head. Let me know how it goes!!

By the way, I'm thinking about making speech therapy videos again on YouTube. What would you like to see explained in a video? What are the things about our job that you need support in? What drives you crazy?

I'd appreciate your ideas!!

Thank you,
Sarah

Hi everyone, Back 18 months ago....one of you fabulous people named Mary reached out to me and asked me to create a Spanish version of the Imitation Hierarchy by Laura Mize. The Imitation Hierarchy is something that I think a lot of SLPs know on a gut level, but back before I wasn't aware of a formal hierarchy. It is part of the 180 page Building Verbal Imitation Skills in Toddlers program that Laura Mize has created on her website. She is a legend and a tremendous resource who has a ton of...

February has arrived! đź’ť Wow, January flew by and I'm hoping that February is a fresh start in so many ways. January wasn't a great start to the year, am I right? It was a rough one for our country and boy did that month drag on or what? February in Illinois brings ISHA, our state convention. I've been to ISHA a lot over the years and I've always liked it. The last time I was there was in 2019 and back then I actually made a video about it: What ISHA is like. Funny to think that it probably...
