Here's how I give the Receptive One Word Picture Vocab Test...

Hi everyone,

The good news is that 2026 is going pretty good for me, definitely a year of new learning. However, 2024 and 2025 were both two of my worst years ever. I had a lot of hopes for 2025 because it was my year in the Chinese zodiac (I'm the snake). It held so much promise and then in the end it was bust. *cue tears*

LUCKILY, it seems like 2026 is slowly becoming a wonderful year where I'm learning a ton of new skills and enjoying the process. I can't wait to share more in subsequent emails.

Like I said last week in my email, each Sunday I'll be releasing an assessment focused video! This week I thought I would share some more about the CELF but the video quality of that video I shot was not there. So I'm moving on to the Receptive One Word Picture Vocabulary Test, Spanish-Bilingual Edition, 4th Edition. That's a mouthful! So I typically just write ROW-PVT SB4.

Watch the video: Receptive One Word Picture Vocabulary Test Spanish- Bilingual Edition - Scoring and Walkthrough

I talk in my video about some of the problematic issues with this assessment. It's not something I've giving to every student on my caseload. However, it might be right for a student who "needs a win." That's because this assessment is "easy" for students. If I have a student that's bombing everything else, I could give this assessment so that it's not "doom and gloom" in an IEP meeting. How I write that is "a relative strength for this student is understanding vocabulary words in Spanish at the one word level."

I actually gave this assessment to two different limitedly verbal bilingual students in two different therapeutic settings this year. The building SLPs wanted to see if their student could understand some word in Spanish, and both of those students demonstrated that they could. I got standard scores for this assessment for those students, which was a huge win. The scores might have been in the below average range but it demonstrated to the team and family that the student understood words in Spanish at the one word level.

Anyway, if you are interested in learning more about this assessment, feel free to check out the video. Next week will be the expressive companion of this assessment.

Have a great week ahead!!

Thank you,

Sarah 💝

Hi everyone, I'm walking through the TOLD P5 this week. It's a solid test that I actually forget about. I like that it feels like bulky and long than the CELF. It feels like a real production when you have to give the CELF. But with the TOLD P5, you feel like you get solid info but you didn't have to work too hard to get it! I've given the TOLD P5 before, but I'd like to hear what you think about it! Watch: TOLD P5 BUT you might be just DONE with any speech therapy related if you are on...

Hi everyone, Have you given the TILLS before? The reason I ask is that I do a complete walkthrough of the test in the video below, but as someone who has never given it. So it's my first impressions and honest reaction to the test as I go through it. First of all, 15 subtests? Man, I'm wondering if that's the largest number of subtests I've seen on an assessment before. It certainly feels like the assessment is doing a lot... maybe too much? That's just one thing I noticed about the test. I'd...

Hi everyone, School is out over here and it's nice to have a break. My kids have school for a bit more and I'm still busy with some speech things in order to earn a bunch of interesting CEUs (that I'll elaborate on over the course of the year ahead). But I'm looking at my planner for the summer and I'm wondering where I'm going to get in some relaxation. I'm taking a class towards my doctorate and it's essentially a research methods course... so that's going to take up some time... Have I...
